A Market Journey Turns Fatal

At least 26 people lost their lives in a tragic boat mishap along the Niger River in Ibaji, Kogi State, on Tuesday. The victims, mostly traders, were traveling to a market in neighboring Edo State when disaster struck.

Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, describing it as “a heartbreaking loss” for the entire community.

Cause of the Accident Still Unknown

Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the accident. However, boat mishaps in Nigeria are often linked to poor safety practices such as overcrowding, use of weak wooden vessels, and lack of life jackets.

Fanwo assured the public that the state government is committed to working with federal agencies to strengthen waterway safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Boat Mishaps: A Recurring Tragedy in Nigeria

Sadly, such accidents are not rare in Nigeria, especially during the rainy season when rivers swell and currents become stronger. In September, at least 31 passengers died in Niger State after an overloaded boat struck a tree trunk in Borgu.

Analysts say many local transport boats operate with little or no regulation, leaving passengers vulnerable to preventable dangers.

The people of Ibaji Local Government Area have been thrown into mourning, with many families devastated by the sudden loss of loved ones.

“This painful tragedy should serve as a reminder of the urgent need for improved regulation and enforcement of safety measures on our waterways,” Fanwo said.
